The story of Mercedes-Benz — the brand that invented the automobile
Mercedes-Benz traces its roots to 1886 when Karl Benz created and patented the Benz Patent-Motorwagen — widely recognized as the world's first true automobile. That same year, Gottlieb Daimler independently developed his own gasoline engine and fitted it to a carriage. These two visionaries never met in person, yet their companies merged in 1926 to form Daimler-Benz — and the Mercedes-Benz brand was born.
The name "Mercedes" came from Emil Jellinek, an Austrian businessman and racing enthusiast who sold Daimler cars to Europe's elite — including the Rothschild family and American billionaires Rockefeller and Astor. He named his fastest racing car after his daughter Mercédès, and the name stuck.
Over 135 years Mercedes-Benz has pioneered nearly every major automotive safety innovation — the crumple zone in 1951, ABS brakes in 1978, the airbag, ESP stability control, and Pre-Safe collision detection.
